Does My Rug Need Cleaning?

Dirty rugs not only look dull and dirty, but the are loaded with pollutants and grime. These dirt particles act like sandpaper on your rugs, breaking down the fibers when you walk on them. This is why it is important to clean your rugs regularly. The best way to maintain your rugs is to vacuum them very slowly, back and forth with repeditive stokes. You should take about 10-20 minutes vacuuming a large area rug.  Doing this will remove 80% of the dirt and grime on your rug. For the average household this should be done at least twice a week. Sound reasonable? I think that is a lot of vacuuming. So, to complement this process Chase recommends getting your rugs professionally cleaned once to twice a year. A professional cleaning penetrates deep into the rugs fibers and washes out the dirt and the pollutants that we track into our homes with our shoes.

DIY Steam Cleaners on Rugs?

Never use a rented or owned residential steam cleaner on your rug. The rug can get caught in the steam cleaner causing the rug to rip and tear. Also rugs need to be professionally dried, and should not lay wet on your floor as it could cause mildew and odor. The DIY cleaner also leaves behind a soapy residue that will attract dirt. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, allow the mud to dry first, scrape the dried mud off of your rug, then vacuum. Clean the remaining stain with water or a drop of Dawn solution and a cloth. Blot dry.
